Subaru has officially unveiled the new BRZ, the second generation of the iconic Japanese sports coupe that takes a decisive step forward by modernizing it in all aspects. The new Subaru BRZ, which as anticipated by the Japanese company will not be marketed in Europe, comes with an improved chassis, with a new naturally aspirated engine, and with the same attention to performance as its predecessor.
2.4 aspirated engine with 231 HP and 250 Nm
Starting from the mechanical configuration, for the new BRZ Subaru has opted for a new four-cylinder engine, once again aspirated, of 2.4 liters which delivers a power of 231 HP and a maximum torque of 250 Nm, the latter value increased by 15% compared to to the maximum torque available on the previous model.
6-speed manual or automatic transmission
The new engine, which helps the new generation Subaru BRZ to obtain a lower center of gravity, is combined as standard with the 6-speed manual gearbox, or alternatively, an automatic gearbox is available on request, again with 6 speeds, with a new mode. Sport that allows for faster and more immediate gear changes.
Weight of 1,315 kg, + 50% torsional stiffness
Subaru claims the new BRZ is the lightest production 2 + 2 sports car around, weighing in at just under 1,315 kilograms. This extreme lightness of the car is made possible by the extensive use of aluminum for the roof, front fenders, and hood. The frame has been reinforced and now offers 50% higher torsional rigidity than before, thanks also to a new frame assembly system and sub-frame architecture.
However, the new BRZ does not sacrifice everyday comfort, it offers a good load capacity with enough space for outings in the name of adventure and sporting activity, thanks to the possibility of folding the rear seats and increasing the load volume. of the trunk.
Interior modernized with digital instrumentation and Starlink multimedia system
As for the interior, the Subaru BRZ 2022 has a completely new dashboard, oriented to the driver and with the technological features required of a modern car of today. The instrument panel has become digital, with a 7-inch display on which we find the speedometer displayed in a central position, while to its left there is a series of configurable driving information. For the Track mode, specific instrument graphics are provided.
Onboard the Japanese sports car there is the Subaru Starlink infotainment system manageable from the 8-inch central touch display which includes SiriusXM, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and other connectivity functions. Exclusive finishes are included on the richer trim levels, while on the 6-speed automatic transmission variant there is also the EyeSight Driver Assist driving assistance system.
Revised dimensions: +30 mm in length
Compared to its predecessor, the new Subaru BRZ changes slightly in size. The new model is longer (30mm), keeping the same width, and lowering a little (-10mm). The wheelbase, which now measures 2,575mm, has also grown by 5mm compared to the first generation.
ESC system updated
For the moment Subaru has not revealed any data on performance but confirming the presence of a new electronic stability control system. The latter offers a choice of five setting levels to allow the driver maximum direct control over the vehicle before ESC is activated. There is of course also the possibility to deactivate it completely.
Sales in the US from fall 2021
The new Subaru BRZ will be produced at the Gunma plant, Japan, and will be marketed, including the North American one, in the second half of 2021.
