The S models from Audi always offer one more portion within the model family with the four rings. More power, more traction, more sovereignty when overtaking, more effort in the chassis, steering and braking. The youngest S-Trio, which will start in autumn 2020, is no exception. The engine information service (mid) has tried out in advance on the S3 Sportback, SQ7 and SQ8 TFSI how this more can be felt.
It starts with the S3 Sportback, which not only looks great in terms of looks and aerodynamics, but also has it all behind the crisp single-frame grille with its grid of large diamonds and large air inlets. Its two-liter TFSI engine in the latest evolutionary stage delivers 310 hp, the torque of 400 Newton meters (Nm) is available between 2,000 and 5,450 rpm – basically whenever it is needed.
After a tiny thinking time, the all-wheel drive gets going with tremendous force when the gas pedal is pressed; the drive force is distributed fully variably between the front and the rear via a seven-stage S tronic via a hydraulic multi-plate clutch in front of the rear axle. In the ideal case and in the “Dynamic” driving mode, the S3 Audi sprints from zero to 100 km / h in just 4.8 seconds and is only braked electronically at 250 km / h.
Impressive is the sovereignty with which the 4.35-meter-long and, with a 75-kilo pilot, 1,575-kilo sports device converts all the power and shows no trace of nervousness even at very high speeds. This is partly due to the elaborate four-link rear axle and the progressive steering.
Partly as a series standard, partly as an option, there is pretty much everything for the S3 Sportback and the sedan that makes driving more pleasant and safer. Thanks to the slightly larger dimensions, the up to five passengers have it a bit more airy than in the predecessor, the trunk with its volume of 325 to 1,145 liters relaxed everyday demands. Audi specifies 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers for consumption. Can be done safely, but not fun. It only becomes interesting from just under a double-digit consumption value. And the price will be in the five-digit range: the S3 Sportback will start on the market in October 2020 from 46,302.53 euros, the S3 sedan from 47,179.83 euros.
The new petrol versions of the SQ7 and SQ8 have even more to offer of all the ingredients. Four more cylinders, for example, the biturbo V8 realizes 507 hp and a maximum torque of a powerful 770 Nm from four liters of displacement. In view of the curb weight of a good 2,200 kilos, the sprint time of 4.1 seconds, which is identical for both of them, is quite considerable, the regulation is as usual at 250 km / h.
An eight-speed Tiptronic and permanent all-wheel drive are decisive parameters for the impressive performance. Sport air suspension and all-wheel steering are installed as standard, while a sport differential and electromechanical active roll stabilization are also available as options. This means that the big SUV can get around the corner even more snappily, without sacrificing standard comfort. And so that a quick standstill is also guaranteed, there is also a ceramic brake that can be hard and steadfastly biting on request in the surcharge list.
Endless space, plenty of luxury, the finest ingredients and combustion power until you drop – the SQ models from Ingolstadt are really contemporary in view of the standard consumption values of around twelve liters of super per 100 kilometers and the corresponding CO2 emissions of more than 270 g / km certainly not. But they demonstrate in an impressive way what can be done with a 2.2-ton truck in terms of driving dynamics. At prices from 93,287.40 euros for the SQ7, which is also available as a seven-seater on request, and from 101,085.72 euros for the even finer and always five-seater SQ8.
