Audi presents the restyling of its Q5 SUV, which brings to the debut the rear lights with OLED technology and the new sportier Sportback coupé body. The aesthetic changes are similar to those we have already seen on the A4 flagship, while from a technical point of view comes a new mild-hybrid diesel engine MHEV, 2.0 turbodiesel with 204 HP and 400 Nm. The two new versions of the Audi SUV arrive in dealerships in Italy during the fourth quarter of 2020.


Audi Q5 2021, how it’s done

How is the new Audi Q5 2021 outside? The SUV grows 19 millimetres in length, reaching 4.68 meters. The width (without mirrors) of 1.89 meters and a height of 1.66 meters remain unchanged. The Sportback is 8 millimetres longer. The drag coefficient (C X ) of 0.30.

The wheelbase in both is 2.82 meters. In the front, the octagonal single frame is now wider, while the side air intakes can count on a superior longitudinal development and on decorative trapezoidal inserts. Thanks to the daytime running lights, the LED headlights have a brand new light signature.

Looking at the car from the side, the new insert stands out in correspondence with the side sills, while at the rear the protagonists of the design of the new Audi Q5 are the decorative strip that connects the optical groups and the redesigned extractor.

The standard finishes are flanked by the advanced trim levels, which include vertical chromed strips for the single frame and bumper slides in silver instead of black, and S line. The latter, with a sporting vocation, includes the honeycomb grille of the aforementioned single frame and the chrome finish of the insert on the extractor.

The colour range includes twelve shades, including the new district green and ultra-blue paints. On request, the black look package is available. As standard, the new Audi Q5 adopts 18-inch alloy wheels and optionally 20 and 21 inches.

Inside the Audi Q5 is characterized by a dashboard that extends horizontally from the dashboard. In the centre stands the large MMI touch display with acoustic feedback, controlled by the pressure/rotation knob located at the base of the console of the previous model.

The new generation of OLED technology, derived from the Audi A8 flagship, debuts on the new Audi Q5 2021 SUV. OLEDs are particularly efficient organic light-emitting diodes that generate exceptionally wide and homogeneous illumination. The OLED rear lights, on request, are divided into three cores, each of which consists of six segments so as to give life to multiple luminous signatures and characteristic illuminations.

The OLED rear light clusters provide innovative proximity signalling: when the car is stationary, if a road user approaches the new Audi Q5 within two meters, all segments light up.

As soon as the car is moving again, the original characteristic lighting is restored. The range of functions of the OLED rear lights is completed by the dynamic direction indicators.


Audi Q5 2021, MIB 3 infotainment

The infotainment on board the new Audi Q5 2021 SUV includes the third generation modular platform MIB 3, which is characterized by a computing power ten times higher than the previous MIB 2 system. At the top of the instrumentation is the Audi virtual fully digital cockpit plus. The driver can choose between three views and manages the options shown on the 12.3-inch Full HD display thanks to the multifunction steering wheel controls. The optional head-up display projects information directly into the driver’s field of vision.

Thanks to the sophisticated networking made possible by the new MMI system, the Audi Q5 replicates the intuitiveness of smartphones in the cockpit. The standard 10.1-inch high-resolution TFT display has clear and essential graphics, while the menu structure simplifies navigation.

The MMI search is based on the input of free text: the results are provided in a very short time. The voice command recognizes commonly used expressions and by opting for the package Audi connects infotainment & navigation plus, answers questions not only on the basis of the information on board but also using the knowledge in the cloud. The integration of information online improves the degree of recognition of the indications and the quality of the results.

The Audi connect and Audi connects plus portfolio includes multiple online services, including Car-to-X connectivity which leverages the collective intelligence of the Audi fleet. The cars share information about entering and exiting parking spaces, providing estimates of free parking spaces, danger warnings, such as fog or ice, and speed limits. In addition to these functions, information about traffic lights.

The navigation of the new Audi Q5 uses high-resolution satellite images from Google Earth and three-dimensional models of numerous European cities. The DAB + digital radio is standard, while the voice assistant Amazon Alexa, cloud-based, is built into the MMI operating system and allows the driver to access the many features and the same Amazon services available from home or through enabled devices.

The new 2.0 (40) TDI Quattro S Tronic diesel engine with MHEV mild hybrid technology makes its debut in the new Audi Q5 2021. The aluminium crankcase weighs 20 kg less than the engine used in the previous model, while the crankshaft is lightened by 2.5 kg. The 12 Volt mild-hybrid technology can reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.3 litres per 100 km.

The heart of the system is the belt-driven starter-alternator (RSG) connected to the crankshaft which, in the deceleration phases, is able to recover up to 5 kW of power. This energy is stored in the specific lithium-ion battery, from which it is subsequently conveyed to the devices integrated into the on-board network. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal in a speed range between 55 and 160 km / h, the Audi Q5 2.0 (40) TDI Quattro S Tronic MHEV 12V can coast (coast ) with the engine on or off.

The range of action of the start/stop system is extended up to 22 km / h and the engine is restarted particularly quickly and almost imperceptibly. The MHEV version sprints from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 222 km / h. The hybrid diesel engine respects is Euro 6 d-ISC-FCM (WLTP 3.0) approved and is characterized by the new twin-dosing SCR system with double urea injection, particularly functional for the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Specifically, the urea-based solution AdBlue is injected upstream of the two SCR catalysts arranged in series.

In addition to the 2.0 (40) TDI Quattro S Tronic 204 HP variant, the 2.0 (35) TDI 163 HP MHEV 12V front-wheel drive and 7-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission is also available at launch. There is also the 2.0 (45) TFSI 265 CV MHEV 12V version, with S Tronic gearbox, Quattro all-wheel drive with ultra technology, variable valve timing and direct petrol injection.

Confirmed the availability of the TFSI plug-in hybrid variant and available with two power levels, from 299 and 367 hp total.

The Audi Q5 2.0 (40) TDI adopts the seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive with ultra technology.

The suspension of the new Audi Q5 2021 can count on five-link suspension both at the front and at the rear. Dynamic steering with variable power assistance and reduction is available as an option. The suspension is offered in four variants: the standard configuration is flanked by the sports version and the option with adjustable shock absorbers.

Top of the range is the adaptive air suspension which allows the vehicle to be adjusted in five levels from the ground.

The adaptive driver assistance combines the functions adaptive cruise control, the traffic jam assists and the Active lane assists: supports the driver by automatically adjusting the distance from the vehicle ahead and contributing, by means of slight corrective action to the steering, to maintain directionality and centrality within the lane.

The predictive efficiency assistant, finally, provides directions to one style of efficient driving and voted to fuel economy.
